Captain Phillips review
Captain Phillips is a movie based on a true story and a book, starring Tom Hanks.
If you look at the other films Tom Hanks has played in, there is always something happening when he is traveling. Look at Sully (a plane crash), cast away (yet another plane crash), the terminal (an airport drama) and apollo 13 (a failed space mission)
But this time, he’s not screwing something up a couple hundred meters in the sky.
This time Tom hanks, playing as captain Richard Phillips, got himself in trouble at the ocean of east-Africa.
Richard Phillips was the captain of a big container ship called the Mearsk Alabama, traveling from America to Kenia. It all went well until a bunch of Somalian pirates hijacked the ship. Because their boss forced them to.
Their first attempt was a lot of drama, both for captain Phillips, and captain Mussa (the captain of the pirate ship)
The pirate ship’s engine failed and they had to go back. But the second day and attempt went better (for the pirates)
The pirates first got aboard of the Mearsk Alabama. They wanted money, they expected millions. Or TV’s, but the captain had 30.000 US Dollars. And some food for people in the southern part of Africa.
So the pirates got in a lifeboat with the captain and kept him hostage. As a way to get their high expected millions.
The navy seals got involved quickly, but could they save Captain Phillips? While there were 4 somalian pirates, with big guns and almost no availability of speaking English.
The true story played in 2009 and the movie was made in 2013. So (sadly) no pirate ships with big cannons like you would see in the Pirates Of The Caribbean.
The whole movie went on quickly, no boring parts where there was just people talking. It was a lot of hard decisions and action.
The setting was kinds boring though. But you can not really expect more when the movie is called Captain Phillips.
It was just water, and boats. At one point some cool ships got involved but that was about it. There was not really anything they could do to make it look better, without it being unrealistic and not true to the real story. However, I do recommend watching this movie, if you like action and a little bit of drama.
